How come you never link to actual examples from the "decent" blogs to prove your alleged points? Why do you only link to yourself?

ReplyDeleteI don't think that there's any need to provide links to actual examples to prove your points. Private Eye doesn't have footnotes to tell you which speech by Blair or Brown it's spoofing. Stand-up comics don't have to prove that they ever saw a railway sandwich with curly edges or a mother-in-law with thick hairy arms. Cohen never gives us the date/time/place of these mysterious Islington liberal relativist dinner parties.

ReplyDeleteWell, yeah, but think how much more telling and devastating your posts would be if you could occasionally point to real examples of what you mock. Otherwise some of your six readers might start to think you were simply, y'know, creating strawmen.

Straw men: well I was wondering what all this stuff about the academic/media complex was, and whether Malky was this time making it all up and whether he had this time gone too far. But then my attention was drawn to the latest thoughts of one of the Alan Johnsons, and all was instantly made clear.

ReplyDeleteI imagine you think most of these posts are deeply unfair, Gene, and you'd be right - they are.
If you look up "satire" or "parody" in the dictionary, it'll probably say something to the effect of Comical exaggeration with mocking intent.
I think that sums it up quite well.
Personally I always demand that any satirist provide a full and complete transcript of what they are mocking so I can see that it is fair comment.

I have just consulted my copy of Gulliver's Travels and I have to say I am appalled by the lack of author's footnotes.

I had wondered whether some of the comments on HP were parodies, written by inflitrators from Aaro-Watch or the Encyclopedia of Decency perhaps. When I read stuff that starts "Why don't you condemn the SWP and its ......." I instinctively think of "comical exaggeration with mocking intent".

ReplyDeleteBut on the whole, I simply don't feel even a twinge of recognition from the portrait of "decents" you are trying to paint. That's why I said links might be helpful.
